The Edo or Bini Tribe (from the name “Benin”) people are a Nigerian ethnic group who live predominantly in Edo State but also in the Delta, Ondo, and Rivers states.
They are descendants of the Benin Empire’s founders and speak the Edo language.
They are closely related to other ethnic groups who speak Edoid languages, such as the Esan. It is important to note, however, that the name “Benin” (and “Bini”) is a Portuguese corruption, derived from the word “Ubinu,” which first appeared around 1440 during the reign of Oba Ewuare the Great.
The Edo’s traditional meal is Pounded yam or eba with vegetables, melon or okra soups with bush meat, beef, or fish, etc.
