African Presidential Scholars Program at University of Michigan USA

The University of Michigan’s African Presidential Scholars Program (UMAPS) welcomes early-career academic members from Ethiopia, Ghana, South Africa, Liberia, Uganda, and other African countries to the university for up to six-month residencies.

The program will include two cohorts per year starting in 2020. (August through December, and January through May). During the application process, applicants will have the option to declare their choice for a specific cohort.

During their time at UM, scholars are partnered with a faculty mentor and have full access to the university’s resources to enhance their work on a research project, an academic degree, a new course, a grant proposal, or other relevant activity.

The initiative promotes the development of the next generation of African scholars while also assisting their home institutions in their capacity-building efforts. Individuals can apply for a residency for two, four, or six months.

Criteria

The candidate must be a professor from an Ethiopian, Ghanaian, Ugandan, Liberian, or South African university. Early-career faculty members will be given great preference, as one of the program’s key goals is to aid in capacity building in African academia. Faculty in their mid-career will also be considered.

• The candidate’s and the proposed scholarship program’s academic quality
• Academic compatibility of the candidate with the other candidates in the cycle, as well as the above-mentioned areas of interest
• The candidate’s home institution’s support
• Candidates from disadvantaged backgrounds will be given special consideration.
• Gender equity in the present batch of scholars, as well as throughout the African academia, will be a major consideration.
• Candidates with considerable foreign experience will not be given preference for this program.

Benefits

Those accepted into the UMAPS Program will receive the following benefits:

• Four to six months of residency at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, Michigan, with full access to the university’s resources and a faculty mentor.
• Airfare from their home nation to Ann Arbor, Michigan (round-trip).
• While at UM, you will get free lodging and a modest stipend to cover living, health care, and research expenses. Spouses and/or dependents are not permitted to participate in the UMAPS program.
• Space for an office or a laboratory
• Possibility to present research to the University of Michigan community
