Stinson Scholars Program at Notre Dame

Stinson Scholars Program at the University of Notre Dame is an opportunity open to all undergraduate students who demonstrated an excellent academic achievement, and maximum commitment to service and are majoring in the College of Engineering.

Why the University of Notre Dame

The University of Notre Dame was founded in November 1842 by Rev. Edward F. Sorin, C.S.C., a priest of the Congregation of Holy Cross, a French missionary order. It is located adjacent to South Bend, Indiana, the center of a metropolitan area with a population of more than 315,000. Chartered by the state of Indiana in 1844, the University was governed by the Holy Cross priests until 1967, when governance was transferred to a two-tiered, mixed board of lay and religious trustees and fellows.

Notre Dame has grown from the vision of Father Sorin, who sought to establish a great Catholic university in America, and has remained faithful to both its religious and intellectual traditions. Today, the school seeks to be an enlightening force for a world deeply in need. The departments of theology and philosophy are regarded as among the finest in the world while faculty in all departments participate in the mission to ensure that Notre Dame’s Catholic character informs all of our endeavors. From legal scholars who study civil rights and religious liberty to scientists and engineers who investigate environmental protection, to sociologists who examine religious and ethical practices, Notre Dame continues to be a place where the Church does its thinking

In a sentence ‘Notre Dame is a place born of vision and defined by its Catholic character. The school has a unique spirit. It is traditional, yet open to change. It is dedicated to religious belief no less than to scientific knowledge. It has always stood for values in a world of facts. It has kept faith in Father Sorin’s vision.

Benefits

Selected scholars will be opportune to the following awards;

An annual award of $25,000 toward the cost of tuition for up to four years of undergraduate study, for a total of $100,000. This award is independent of any financial aid that a scholar may qualify for and receive.

Mandatory participation in a funded one-week Outward Bound Wilderness Leadership Canoe Expedition (see; https://scholars.nd.edu/enrichment/outward-bound-wilderness-leadership-experience/) in the Boundary Waters in Minnesota.
An enrichment fund of $12,000, minus the cost of Outward Bound, that can be used for self-designed enrichment projects approved by the Notre Dame Scholars’ Program, including study abroad and/or unpaid service, research, internships, or professional development related to their area of study.

To be Eligible

A list of requirements to be met for the scholarship application are;

Applicant must have an outstanding academic achievement
Applicants must have a commitment to service
Applicants must be majoring in the College of Engineering
Applicant must be a full-time undergraduate enrollment.
Applicants must maintain a 3.0 cumulative grade point average. If a scholar’s cumulative GPA falls below this requirement at the conclusion of their second semester of freshman year, or at the conclusion of any semester thereafter, they will be placed on scholarship probation and retain the scholarship for the next semester. They will then have the opportunity to reestablish a cumulative GPA over 3.0. If for two consecutive semesters they have a cumulative average below 3.0, the scholarship will be revoked for the following semester. A scholar will regain the scholarship if their cumulative average returns to 3.0 or higher.

Applicant must have an academic intent in engineering. If a scholar decides to change their academic intent, they must notify the Notre Dame Scholars’ Program after three semesters of study in order to switch to another scholarship. Scholars will be moved to another merit scholarship with the equivalent tuition scholarship award. However, if a scholar received enrichment funding as part of their original award, this funding will no longer be guaranteed.

Maintenance of good academic and disciplinary standing. If a scholar is subject to academic or disciplinary probation or dismissal, they will automatically lose their scholarship and status as a scholar and will not be reconsidered.

University merit scholarship consideration is given for a maximum of eight semesters. Scholarship eligibility is not extended to account for any semester(s) the scholar did not meet scholarship requirements.
