People who live on both sides of the Benue River in Nigeria and speak a Benue-Congo branch of the Niger-Congo family of languages.

The Tiv are subsistence farmers who grow yams, millet, and sorghum, which are all consumed as porridge or combined in sauces and stews to make them more appealing.

Because of the tsetse fly, few cattle are kept, despite the abundance of goats and chicks. The polygynous Tiv family lives in a ring of round huts around a receiving hut, with brothers usually living next to one another.
