The Higher Education Ordinance of 1993 served as the foundation for this list of Swedish universities (as amended until January 2006). In Sweden, all higher education is publicly sponsored, with a few notable exceptions.
There are differences between university and högskola in the Swedish higher education system (university and university college respectively). The högskolor are typically more focused on practical sciences and only have restricted privileges giving doctorates, whereas universities are research-oriented and may offer Bachelor’s, Master’s, and Doctor’s degrees in many academic subjects.
