In recent years, Jamaica’s higher education system has undergone significant changes. Given that the country only gained independence less than 60 years ago, the governments have made significant efforts to eradicate the remains of slavery and colonialism.
As a result, they now have a variety of colleges that have responded to the demands of today’s labor market. They also have several international connections and cooperation programs, and the country has become a hub for satellite campuses of other universities.
The University of the West Indies (UWI) was founded 71 years ago to meet the needs of the Caribbean in the field of education. It has five sites in different countries and serves 17 Caribbean countries with an education. One of them is in the Jamaican town of Mona.

The Northern Caribbean University (NCU) was founded more than a century ago and now has four campuses across Jamaica. These can be found in Mandeville, Salem, Kingston, and Montego Bay, among other places.
In 2019, around 5,000 students enrolled in one of the university’s 12 graduate programs or more than 60 undergraduate programs.
