The Schwarzman Scholars Program is one of the most prestigious fully funded master’s scholarships in the world. It sends up to 200 young leaders each year to Tsinghua University in Beijing, China, for a one-year Master’s degree in Global Affairs — with tuition, accommodation, travel and a stipend fully covered.
Applications for the Class of 2027–2028 are open now, and the global deadline is 9 September 2026. Here is everything you need to know before you apply.
What the scholarship covers
Schwarzman Scholars is a genuinely full ride. The award covers:
- Full tuition and fees for the Master’s programme
- Room and board (accommodation at Schwarzman College)
- Travel to and from Beijing at the start and end of the programme
- An in-country study tour
- Required course books and supplies
- A personal stipend for living expenses
- Health insurance
Eligibility requirements
1. Undergraduate degree
You must hold a bachelor’s degree or equivalent from a recognised institution. If you are still studying, you must be on track to complete all degree requirements before 1 August of your enrolment year (1 August 2027 for this cohort). There is no restriction on your field of study — all disciplines are welcome. What matters is that you can clearly explain how the programme will develop your leadership potential in your field.
2. Age: 18 to 28
You must be at least 18 and not yet 29 years old as of 1 August 2027. This is a firm requirement, so check your date of birth against that cut-off carefully before investing time in an application.
3. English proficiency
All teaching is in English. If English is not your first language, you must submit official test scores. Accepted tests and minimum scores are:
- TOEFL: 100 out of 120
- IELTS: 7.0
- Cambridge English (C1 Advanced or C2 Proficiency): 185
- Duolingo English Test: 130
Good news for many Nigerian and African applicants: this requirement is waived if you studied at an undergraduate institution where the primary language of instruction was English for at least two years of your programme. It is also waived if you have studied in English for two or more years at master’s level or above. Since most Nigerian universities teach in English, many applicants will not need to sit a test at all — but confirm your institution qualifies before assuming.
Note: you do not need to speak Mandarin to apply.
What the selection committee looks for
Schwarzman Scholars is explicitly a leadership programme, not purely an academic one. Candidates are assessed on:
- Leadership abilities and track record
- Exemplary character and integrity
- Academic aptitude and intellectual ability
- Empathy and intercultural competency
- Open-mindedness
- Entrepreneurial spirit
Strong grades alone will not carry an application. The committee wants evidence that you have already led something and that you intend to keep doing so.
Required application documents
The full application is submitted online in English. You will need:
- Resume/CV — maximum 2 pages
- Leadership Essay — 750 words
- Statement of Purpose — 500 words
- Official transcripts from every degree-granting institution you have attended
- Three letters of recommendation from people who know your work directly and can speak to your intellect, character and leadership with specific examples
- A video introduction — no more than one minute, in any style you like
- English proficiency scores, if not waived
The programme specifically discourages sending extra materials such as portfolios or additional recommendations — they will not be passed to the review committee.
Key dates for the Class of 2027–2028
- Application opened: 8 April 2026
- Application deadline (US & Global): 9 September 2026, 3:00 p.m. EDT
- Selection and interviews: October – November 2026
- Programme begins: August 2027
Applicants with Chinese citizenship (mainland China, Hong Kong, Macau, Taiwan) apply through a separate China application system on a different timeline.
How to apply
- Confirm you meet the age and degree requirements, particularly the “not yet 29 by 1 August 2027” rule.
- Check whether your English proficiency requirement is waived by your undergraduate language of instruction.
- Create an account on the official application portal and start early — you can save and return to the form as often as you need.
- Approach your three recommenders well ahead of the deadline. Give them your CV and a summary of what you are applying for.
- Draft the Leadership Essay and Statement of Purpose early and revise them several times. These two essays carry enormous weight.
- Record your one-minute video introduction — keep it natural rather than over-produced.
- Submit before the deadline. Applications close at 3:00 p.m. EDT sharp on 9 September 2026.
If you are currently an undergraduate, check whether your university has a fellowships advisor and an internal deadline. Many institutions run their own nomination or review process, and missing it can cost you the opportunity.
How competitive is it?
Extremely. Schwarzman Scholars selects a cohort of up to 200 from a very large international applicant pool each year, and reported acceptance rates sit in the low single digits. That should not discourage you from applying — but it does mean your essays and recommendations need to be genuinely strong, and you should apply for other scholarships in parallel rather than treating this as your only option.
