In the Republic of Ireland, all education after the second level is referred to as third-level education. This includes advanced study at colleges and universities as well as Post Leaving Certificate (PLC) and other courses.

The King’s Inns of Dublin play a small part in education, focusing on preparing students for the degree of barrister-at-law so they can work as lawyers. Ireland’s medical colleges are subject to specific rules.

In 2008, the Times Higher Education Supplement listed seven institutions of higher learning in Ireland among the top 500 universities worldwide.
