David L. Boren Scholarships from the National Security Education Program 2022

Boren Scholarships support undergraduate students to study abroad in areas of the world that are critical to U.S. interests such as geographic areas, languages, and fields that are relevant to national security. The scholarship program is sponsored by the National Security Educational Program (NSEP).

Boren Scholarships provide about $20,000 to U.S. undergraduate students to study abroad in areas of the world that are important to U.S. interests. Boren scholars show different academic backgrounds, but all are interested in studying less popularly taught languages.

NSEP has a broad definition of national security, explaining that the scope of national security has expanded to include not only the traditional concerns of protecting and promoting American well-being but also many others like the challenges of global society, sustainable development, environmental degradation, global disease and hunger, population growth and migration, as well as economic competitiveness.

Eligibility Criteria

As stated above, Boren Scholarships are for undergraduate students. To be eligible to apply, you must be;

  • A U.S. citizen at the time of application.
  • A high school graduate, or have earned a GED.
  • Matriculated in an undergraduate degree program located within the United States accredited by an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education.
