Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) is a federal government research institution based in Zaria, Kaduna State. ABU was established on October 4, 1962, as the University of Northern Nigeria. ABU Zaria was named after the erstwhile leader of northern Nigeria, Sir Ahmadu Bello (1901-1966), the Sardauna of Sokoto. The prime held its Opening Ceremony on the 4th of October, 1962, and became its first Chancellor.
The University runs three major campuses: Samaru and Kongo in Zaria and the School of Basic Studies in Funtua.

A New Zealander named Sir Norman Stanley Alexander, a Professor of Physics at the University College, Ibadan, became the First Principal and Vice-Chancellor of Ahmadu Bello University in 1961.

Through the years and efforts of successive vice-chancellors, the University has experienced remarkable expansion. It has become the biggest and the most comprehensive institution in Sub-Saharan Africa and the second in Africa after the University of Cairo in Egypt, with nearly 35,000 pupils.
